First Three Weeks in Our Ireland Home
Tarynne Mingione, July 21 2013
Now that we have settled into our new home, we’re overdue to share what we’ve been up to the past three weeks.
We are currently living and working in Kildare County of Ireland.
For the past three weeks we have been treated with the most incredible weather and we’ve heard far too many times that we are getting the wrong impression of a summer in Ireland.
Hey, we’ll take our sixth consecutive month of summer.
A typical workday is something like this:
James, Emily and I bum around making coffee around 9 a.m. By 9:30 a.m. we are in our rubber roots and pulling weeds, harvesting (right now there is spinach, lettuce, strawberries, raspberries, courgettes, broad beans and some spring onions),
clearing flower beds, watering, edging, mowing, trimming, putting nets over newly planted veggies, or planting (right now cabbage, varieties of lettuce).
By 1:30 a.m. we make lunch.
Since Ireland is officially in a drought presently, we are spending lots of time running around watering newly planted trees and plants. Maybe we’d spent too much time in the sun the other day, but I thought it was funny to see James cruisin’ on a tractor.
I think it’s because he looked like a big kid on a little ride.
Stuck in first, he looked a little bored.

We wrap it up around 5:30 or 6 p.m. and retreat to the kitchen to creatively come up with something for dinner. We head back out to the garden with baskets and collect some greens and whatever else we can for dinner and then fix up dinner and spend the next few hours doing I don’t know what but somehow it’s always 1:30 a.m. and we are regretting not going to bed earlier (that is exactly whats happening as this is being typed).
Some days we are assigned random but fun tasks, like collecting elderflowers from the meadows and then making elderflower cordial.
The last recipe I made can be found on our recipes page, or click here!
Besides that, the second week we were here we went back to Dublin to see Justin Timberlake, Great Gatsby and get some bangers and mash and beers for James’ birthday.
You can watch a short news clip about the building and us running around with prints here!
This week we are planning on heading to Wicklow for a couple days when we are off.
It’s fun. We already feel as if the days aren’t long enough and so far these first three weeks have passed by much quicker than we would have liked. We’re excited to be here and loving this nontraditional Irish summer!
